About

I joined the Department of Sociology at Middle East Technical University as assistant professor in May 2019. Broadly speaking, my research interests include critical urban studies, social theory, urban political economy and the politics of nature.

I received my PhD degree from the Department of Anthropology at the City University of New York, Graduate Center with a thesis entitled “Claiming the Right to the City: Towards the Production of Space from Below.” Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in New York, Boston and Istanbul, my doctoral work constructs a theoretical framework in which diverse and often-contradictory urban politics that are pulled behind the banner of the right to the city could be delineated and analyzed.

I taught several courses at Baruch College and Brooklyn College of New York over the course of my doctoral studies on urban and transnational anthropology, ethnographic practice, sociology of race and racism, and the history of Middle Eastern modernization. Before joining METU, I also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Ankara on the sociology of everyday life and political economy, architectural design and urban ecology, and the politics of capitalist urbanization.

I’m currently working on integrating the conceptual and theoretical insights from Marxist geography and urban studies into the field of disaster studies, with a specific focus on earthquake processes, spatio-temporal frameworks, and the production of space.
